Off-Season Storage
When it's time to put the racecar away for winter storage, there are a few things you can do to help your tires hibernate so that they will be ready to perform the next season. Some of these tips will even apply in between race weekends.
- If possible, support the vehicle on jack stands in order to relieve the tires of any load. This will also eliminate flat-spotting of the tire tread.
- Remove the valve cores to allow all air to escape. The absence of air pressure removes any tension and stresses on the tire carcass.
- Cover the tires with a dark plastic garbage bag or equivalent to keep sunlight away.
- For tires removed from the vehicle, keep them stored in a cool and dark environment away from appliances or devices with an electric motor. Electric motors generate ozone which will accelerate tire rubber degredation.
